Athlete in Training: Volleyball Player

Essential Investigative Questions and Prompts:

State the task in your own words, and why it is important to you and to others (in your community and the world wide community):

We are to write, direct and film a video describing both fitness routines and nutritional techniques specifically created to optimize a volleyball player's training. This is extremely important to the community because we will be posting the video to this very wiki, allowing coaches and players all over the web to watch and learn. This is helpful because it can help to ensure better and safer training for volleyball players. Healthy and informed players lead to less injury which leads healthier, happier people.

State how the task is related to the AoI (and the guiding question): How can I pull my own weight and

How can I add to the greater good by sharing my skills and knowledge through multimedia?

This task is related to the current AoI (community and service) because we are posting it, as we have stated earlier, on the internet for all to see and use as a reliable resource. It helps to answer the guiding question (How can I pull my own weight?) by teaching volleyball players to optimize their abilities and pull their own weight on their team. Now why does that matter? Well, if you are looking at the LJA community, healthier players are more effective in practice and come out of it feeling better. If student athletes are not practicing proper training techniques and injure themselves they will hinder not only their physical performance but their academic performance. No one does good in school when they are injured or feel sick. Now, on a larger scale, when someone is pulling their own weight, their team is more effective. If the LJA volleyball team is succeeding, this increases school spirit. School spirit energizes the students and fosters an enthusiastic and vibrant school atmosphere. When people feel good about their school, they learn better and perform better in school. So this will subtly add to the greater good through multimedia.

This project will also help us to learn to pull our own weight(s) as team members because not only are we all required to take part in demonstrating the workouts, but if we don't divide and conquer or work together, or if one of us does not do their part, not only will this video not be as effective as it could be but the other group mates will be stressed out.

Investigate and list available tools and resources and list them here:

  • Amy Tousman MPH RD, CDE (Briana's mom)

  • Nichole (Volleyball Player)
  • Websites given by Ms. Sokol and Mr. Connors
  • Flip Camera
  • Gym Equipment (weights, machines, mats...)
  • Internet
  • Macs/ iMovie

Write a concise description of the task and your solution (‘Design Brief’) addressing ‘who’, ‘what’, ‘why’, and ‘how’:

We will create a video (as aforementioned) that addresses three areas of fitness: stretching, nutrition, and training. Our video will be posted on the Internet (specifically on this wiki and possibly on YouTube) so that people around the world will have access to our fitness information. We want athletes to be able to use our information to improve their overall performance.

Make a list of specifications that your product and presentation MUST have (‘Design Specification’

This product must address nutrition (specifically regarding carbs, fats, protein intake and hydration..it should also specify what to do pregame and post-game as well as why), stretching, weight training (and why it is important specifically for Volleyball), and cardiovascular fitness. This video must have accurate and non-controversial information and use a variety of reliable sources. It also must appropriately use a variety of camera angles and techniques to emphasize the information. More so, one of the focal points of the video should be safety especially in conjunction with the machines. The video must be easy to follow and have a logical production. Moreover, it must be engaging.

List 4 different sources, and cite them properly (You need at least 4 and they must eventually be in MLA format):

Summarize how useful and reliable each source was:

Amy Tousman MPH, RD, CDE: Mother Certified Diabeties Educator, Registered Dietition, Master of Public Health and President of the Hawaii Dietetic Association. She was not used to the best of our abilities because we did not have many specific questions however we were able to use her to check the information that we already knew. Both Nichole and Briana already had prior nutirtion and sports nutrition knowledge because of past projects and personal ventures, so we were able to double check that that information was valid. ALso, during the revision process she added vital information especially concerning the hows and whys of various nutrients.

Nichole Bowen--Nichole was not only a Volleyball player but holds personal interest in nutrition. She was proved reliable by Mrs. Tousman.
Briana Grenert--Briana actually wrote the nutrition portion using mostly her own knowledge and some information form http://www.ext.colostate.edu/pubs/foodnut/09362.html. However, she was originally corroborated by Nichole, and during the revision, she went to her Mother. She asked her mother to read the information and verify that it was true.

http://www.theacc.com/genrel/111005aad.html (The ACC [ Atlantic Coast Confrence]) was reliable because the ACC is a well known athletic organization. Also, the information made logical sense with what we already knew. It was directly from there that we got our sample diet plan.

The stretching handbook was useful because it helped Briana put into words what she already knew about stretching and it agreed with what we learned in PE class which was reliable information. It expanded on it, however the progression was logical and since the information I already knew was correct it is logical to assume that the rest of the basic information was correct.

Briana knew that the Bench press was a very persise art and cuased a lot of injuries, so when she was writing the technique she wanted to confirm what she already had been taught as to not leave out any vital information. So the "How to Master the Bench Press" was extrememly useful.

Describe a set of ‘Tests for Success’ that you will perform on your product to see if your solution was successful (Think of each of the design specs you must meet and how you can test them individually!):

David- we can test the information on our video in the different situations we hope to explain in our vieo.
Fitness workouts: by confronting a PE teacher or actual volleyball athlete. also we can try the workout ourselves in a crash course to proove how it works :)
Nutrition facts: we could do math for the total health facts (carbs, protiens, fats... ect) and set up a diet trial.

Briana: to test the success, we can monitor how many view our video gets. If people see it, we know that if nothing else, the information is getting out there. Also, we could ask for comments and monitor those. It would be possible we could ask our peers who play volleyball (like Jasmine and Makana) to watch our video and comment on it. Then we would really know how valuable the information is. Before we turn it the video, we can also individually watch it and with a list of the check list of the design specifications we can check what we are missing and rectify the situation.
