Research/Investigation Prompts

State the task in your own words, and why it is important to you and and to others (in your community and the worldwide community):

~Our objective is to design a workout that will improve a tennis player's athleticism and benefit their ability to last in a match. This is important to me and others in our community because even though no one in our group plays tennis, the workout will be able to help anyone get in good shape for any kind of athletic activity because no matter what, this workout promises an increase in muscle mass and endurance. Whether it's our small Kailua community or the massive worldwide community, this informational workout video can help tennis players all over the world train for competitions and improve the muscles that are most vital in the game of tennis (or just get them in shape, even if they don't play tennis).

State how the task is related to the AOI (and the guiding question):

~This task is related to the AOI, community and service, because the workout video that we will be making is open to the public. More specifically, it is directed towards people who play tennis either for their own enjoyment or for competitive playing. The guiding question, "How can I pull my own weight?", is answered in this video in a literal way, being that we are actually lifting weights in the weight room, hence the term "pull my own weight." It is also answered metaphorically because it addresses how one can do their part in their own personal training, therefore pulling their own weight by being independent and taking initiative.

Investigate and list available tools and resources and list them here:

Write a concise description of the task and your solution (‘Design Brief’) addressing ‘who’, ‘what’, ‘why’, and ‘how’:

~For this project we created a video for our assigned athlete (a tennis player). The video we made provided helpful tips to teach other people (coaches, students, athletes) on how to workout and stretch to improve your game when playing tennis. It also helps show ways to be more healthy and fit by knowing what kinds a food you should eat, what exercises you should do, etc. Our goal was to make a video that would be helpful to other people within and outside our community. Hopefully this with spark people interest in the sport, as well as help people that are already tennis players improve. (:

Make a list of specifications that your product and presentation MUST have (‘Design Specification’):

1. Each person must demonstrate a stretch
  • Kiana: Flamingos- stretches quads
  • Olivia: Triceps/biceps stretch- across chest, left and right arm. Pull hand behind head, left and right arm
  • Jasmine: Calve/hamstring stretch- right leg back, left knee at about a 100 degree angle (switch legs and reverse roles)

2. Each person must demonstrate 3 pieces of equipment in the weight room
  • Kiana: Bicycle- heart rate and gluteus maximus; Weight lift (behind head)- triceps; Cross pully- back muscles
  • Olivia: Ab machine- abdominal muscles; Leg curl- gastrocnemius; Pull-down bar- biceps
  • Jasmine: Treadmill- heart rate, endurance, speed; Horizontal leg press- quads and hamstrings; Arm-hang- obliques

3. Must use a variety of camera-angle shots

4. Must have a nutrition plan

5. Must have a works cited page, MLA format

List 4 different sources, and cite them properly (You need at least 4 and they must eventually be in MLA format):

Summarize how useful and reliable each source was:

~All of the sites listed above were used as part of our research and they were are very useful. They are reliable because what each article/website said was repeated or related to what was said in many other articles/websites. Our sources were very useful and each educated us in the lifestyle and physical requirements of a tennis player. They were pretty easy/simple to incorporate in our project and they were also very reliable, being that they are simply sites about organizations located in our state community (in Oahu). Looking at pictures and videos also helped a lot by clearly showing us how things were done visually (instead of just reading the information). This is very useful for those who are visual learners.

Describe a set of ‘Tests for Success’ that you will perform on your product to see if your solution was successful (think of each of the design specs you must meet and how you can test them individually):

~Have a survey of some sort to get feed back from people of how the video helped or did not help

~Ask people (who have watched the video) in person to get feedback

~Set up a blog so that people who have watched the video, can go on the blog and write comments about it
