Athlete in Training: Tennis Player - I2

Essential Investigative Questions and Prompts:

State the task in your own words, and why it is important to you and to others (in your community and the world wide community):

Our task is to create a video detailing how a tennis player should exercise and eat to be in prime condition for their sport. It is important to us because we are learning important things about keeping in shape (whether or not we are actually tennis players) and it is important to others, both in our community and in the rest of the world, because they can watch our video and learn from what we have created.

State how the task is related to the AoI (and the guiding question):

The task is related to the AOI of Community and Service because we are helping to serve the community of athletes at our school, and others who view our video on the web by providing them with a training and nutrition regiment that they can follow to improve their tennis ability. The guiding question "How can I pull my own weight?" relates to this project because, while making the video, we are learning how to work in a group. We have to pull our weight in the group by both researching the topic and creating the most effective video that will communicate to athletes in our community. It will also help athletes be able to pull their weight while playing their sport by being in the peak physical condition and therefor being able to play to their highest ability.

Investigate and list available tools and resources and list them here:

Mrs. Cummings (the LJA tennis coach)
The tech room, full of resources for filming the video (green screen, cameras, Macs, etc)
The gym's weight room where the machines for training are located and where we can film

Write a concise description of the task and your solution (‘Design Brief’) addressing ‘who’, ‘what’, ‘why’, and ‘how’:

Our task is to create a video that will clearly and effectively teach a tennis player how to effectively change their nutrition and training regimen so that they can have optimum performance during games and practices while using professional techniques in our video to make it clearly, aesthetically pleasing, and useful. Our solution is that we will distribute the workload evenly between researching, preparation, filming, and during the editing process. This project will be beneficial to the athletes watching and we will hopefully help improve their overall performance through the research and information we put into the video and we are able to communicate that information if an a effective manner.

Make a list of specifications that your product and presentation MUST have (‘Design Specification’):

Our video will be successful if it meets the following criterion:
  • Nine total machines are demonstrated and explained within the video
  • At least three stretches are demonstrated and explained
  • A diet plan is outlined and details are given where necessary to help optimize the fitness of a tennis player
  • At least three locations and resources for further practice are given
  • A variety of camera angles and shots are used to effectively show and emphasize the correct way of obtaining prime body condition

List 4 different sources, and cite them properly (You need at least 4 and they must eventually be in MLA format):

Summarize how useful and reliable each source was:

The two LiveStrong websites were the most useful to us. They concisely summarized what muscles are used for what techniques in tennis and even gave us tips on how to strengthen them. It was easy for us to apply this to our athlete training video. I think that this organization is reliable since its entire purpose is to help promote a healthy lifestyle. The website about a tennis diet was also extremely helpful because it gave us a basis of what kind of diet tennis players should be following. The tennis training program website was a little bit less helpful because we were trying to design our own program, but it still gave us useful ideas.

Describe a set of ‘Tests for Success’ that you will perform on your product to see if your solution was successful (Think of each of the design specs you must meet and how you can test them individually!):

- From an athlete’s perspective, was it understandable?

- Do I know what I need eat to have the best nutrition possible (foods and carbs protein, etc)

- Do I know what stretches, machines, and cardiovascular exercises I need to do?

- Do I know what to start off with and what to gradually increase to?

- Do I know what muscles I want to work with?

- Do I use a variety of different filming techniques?

- Do I use transitions?

- Do I use any voiceovers?

- Do I use sound effects in appropriate places and a reasonable amount of times and are the sound effects useful?
