Athlete in Training: Swimmer - I2

Essential Investigative Questions and Prompts:

State the task in your own words, and why it is important to you and to others (in your community and the world wide community):

The task is to create a detailed swimmer's workout, stretch and nutrition plan for any aspiring swimmers. This task is important as it both teaches our team how to construct, plan and produce a detailed exercise program as well as to further our understanding of media representations. The video will be posted online which will allow other youths to have access to workout plans specific to their sport of choice.

State how the task is related to the AoI (and the guiding question):

This video represents the Area of Interaction: Community and Service. It is community service because it benefits all aspiring student swimmers who wish to further research and discover nutrition, exercise and stretching plans as to further the subjects knowledge of their soon to be competitive sport.

Investigate and list available tools and resources and list them here:

We have many resources at hand, first of all we have the Le Jardin School facilities including th weight room, which contains many of the equipment (Elliptical, treadmills, pull up bars and dumb bells). We have flip cameras provided by the technology center. These will be used to shoot our scenes to create a cohesive video. We are provided with MacBook laptops which have special editing software such as iMovie. We are also provided with detailed templates, story boards and step by step scripts to plan out our project, as to prepare our team for filming.

Write a concise description of the task and your solution (‘Design Brief’) addressing ‘who’, ‘what’, ‘why’, and ‘how’:

Our team, including Ingemar Hagen-Keith, Michael Brutsch and Michael Compton will film a short length swimmer's workout plan for our PE class. We are doing so to allow other students like us to have access to comprehensible and simple workout plans if they wish to train for a certain sport, specifically, swimming. We will set up a Step by Step process table to attempt to complete this video on time as well as equally dividing each task. The video process will be cut into 3 equal parts, each with their own responsibilities. Ingemar will take on the Nutrition plan as well as being the main editor. Michael B will draft the Stretching routine and the "Where to Train/Compete" Section as well as helping with the acting and filming. Compton will be drafting the Exercise plan and be the main camera man for this video. By posting out video on the Le Jardin Website we are going to be fulfilling our Community and Service Area of Interaction. The ending project should be a 5 minute video that is both easy to understand, in depth and accurate.

Make a list of specifications that your product and presentation MUST have (‘Design Specification’):

Our video must be accurate, detailed and easy to understand. It should not exceed a reasonable time limit (5-6 minutes). It should be comprised of multiple camera angles and shots. The video should have a workout plan which in turn contains 9 workouts which benefit a swimmer in train. The video must also include a stretching routing catered to swimmers and a nutrition plan as well. The last two components are a safety procedure for the weight room as well as a section on where to compete and or train for swimming.

List 4 different sources, and cite them properly (You need at least 4 and they must eventually be in MLA format):

Summarize how useful and reliable each source was:

  • This link was useful because it described the main key points and requirements for a swimmer's meal plan. This helped us construct our meal plan that we used in our video. Although this wasn't our only source for our meal plan this one was particularly helpful in setting us off in the right track.

  • This site was very helpful because it gave very very many different workouts along with images to help us construct our routine in the video. This one of the more important workout sites we used because it just had so many different ones to choose from.

  • The stretching routine, although short, is still important and this site helped a lot by describing the key muscles used during swimming as well as how to stretch them to stay injury free will competing or training.

  • This site gave many examples of both pools to visit and teams to join if you desire to swim competitively. This site also gave all of the contact information which was very helpful.

Describe a set of ‘Tests for Success’ that you will perform on your product to see if your solution was successful (Think of each of the design specs you must meet and how you can test them individually!):

Because this video is aimed at a student, or learning, swimmers, we will test to see if the video is successful by making sure key information is present during the presentation as well as if the video made coherent sense, such as its organization and flow.
