Essential Investigative Questions and Prompts:
AoI: Community and Service

State the task in your own words, and why it is important to you and to others (in your community and the world wide community):

Through this project we are learning about designing a workout and cinematography.
The task is to create a video demonstrating a workout and a meal plan that can be used by paddlers to train. The video should be captivating, using a variety of camera shots and camera angles. Together, the elements of the video should be helpful in the athletic community, for anyone interested in training for paddling.

State how the task is related to the AoI (and the guiding question):

The task is related to the AoI, since we are trying to educate others on paddling stretches and workouts. We are teaching people who want to become more involved and active in paddling new things to help them get more fit. Our video is easy to be accessed for people at our school to view. Since we have this sport, (paddling), at our school, the paddling coach may be able to find our video useful and show it to kids taking the sport.

Investigate and list available tools and resources and list them here:

-Video Camera
-Disc to burn video onto
- School Laptops (Macs)
- Weight Room in gym
- Kitchen (area)
-Foods as props
-PE clothes
-Proper footwear (shoes)
-Research, Script and Storyboard

Write a concise description of the task and your solution (‘Design Brief’) addressing ‘who’, ‘what’, ‘why’, and ‘how’:

Our task is to create a video on how to maintain a good diet, workouts, exercises and stretches paddlers can use. We will be researching about our topic and demonstrating all the workouts, exercises and stretches in the video. Using a video camera, we will be using different effects and angles to make our video attract people's attention, getting them to be interested. For example, we might use dolly shot or the mid shot effect when recording. Our setting will take place in the weight room since we will be demonstrating all the workouts with the exercising machine. We hope to educate paddlers and have them find our video to be useful. If not, our goal is to get other viewers involved in paddling. We hope people will learn something new from our video.

Make a list of specifications that your product and presentation MUST have (‘Design Specification’):

  • Each person must perform 3 exercises on different weight training equipment
  • Each person must demonstrate one stretch
  • The workouts and stretches that would improve one's paddling performance
  • In the video, each person must describe what exercise they are doing and how they are doing it (as they are doing it)
  • The diet plan must be included in the video in an interesting and comprehensive way
  • Information from a variety of sources is included
  • A variety of camera angles, camera shots, and camera movement is used
  • Edited together smoothly in a way that makes it easier to understand

List 4 different sources, and cite them properly (You need at least 4 and they must eventually be in MLA format):

Summarize how useful and reliable each source was:

These paddling sources was quite reliable and had pictures of someone demonstrating each workout. Wakiki Beachboys Canoe Club is probably a reliable source because it's a club and the club coordinator probably knows a lot about kayaking. Paddling.net is probably reliable because it has information about the authors of the articles and contact info, so you could email them. The Wilderness Sports Training Website had the name of the author and a list of resources. On the Sports Nutrition Webpage, the author has a long list of qualifications and his contact information. The sites educated us and gave us information that we were able to use in our video.

Describe a set of ‘Tests for Success’ that you will perform on your product to see if your solution was successful (Think of each of the design specs you must meet and how you can test them individually!):

We can test our video on a paddler or a person who is interested in paddling to see whether or not he or she improves. After showing a regular paddler our video, we can see if he or she learned anything new that they found useful. We can see the outcome of a person's improvement from the start, starting with the fact that he or she has not have any experience paddling. Keeping a good diet, doing the recommended stretches and workouts will help people keep a healthy life and become more in shape for paddling.
